As anyone who regularly watches "The Daily Show" on Comedy Central can attest, the eccentricity of Fox News' Glenn Beck has provided "Daily Show" host Jon Stewart with heaps of comedic fodder over the past couple of years. But in all the time Stewart has devoted to jabbing the controversial conservative talker, never has he launched into a full-blown impression of Beck like he did on Thursday night.
Watch Jon Stewart parody Glenn Beck here:
Stewart's parodying of Beck, who The New York Times recently compared to Oprah Winfrey for his ability to push book sales, was inspired by Beck's recent bout with appendicitis. Last year Beck’s medical ailments made news when he was hospitalized for what he described at the time as "butt surgery." Stewart, who typically uses video clips in the course of skewering his targets, instead employed a large chalkboard presentation similar to those often used by Beck to explain his thoughts and theories to his audience. Stewart's drawings connected Beck's gastrointestinal system to a host of conspiracies involving Hitler, ACORN, the NEA, Van Jones, Che Guevara, Karl Marx and communism, among others, all working together secretly against Beck's body.
Gesticulating wildly, pausing often for dramatic effect and feigning tears, Stewart introduced his mock anti-Beck conspiracy theory from behind his desk:
I know that what I'm about to say may sound crazy, but isn't it interesting, don't you find it interesting, that when we need Beck's post-election analysis the most doctors said today, "Sorry Glenn, you can't go on the air." Isn't it time we ask ourselves as a nation why that is? ... I'm just a concerned American citizen like you...
A few unamused Glenn Beck fans jumped into a comment thread of a Huffington Post piece on Stewart's skit. One such person said, "You people that think this ... is funny fit right in with the gang u have put in charge in Washington, they are all really a joke," while another added, "Sorry John getting tired of your show ... your jokes are getting boring and same of the same."
No word yet on what Glenn Beck himself thought of Stewart's performance, but it's possible it will not be ignored.
